What Can I Do?

• Spay and neuter! Alter your pet unless it is purebred, and then consider the decision to let your pet breed very carefully. Do not indiscriminately breed more pets. Remember that your special beloved mixed breed pet is truly one of a kind! He or she can never be re-created, even by cloning, since environmental and physical factors influence all creatures. Give a homeless shelter or rescue pet a chance, should you find room in your home or after the loss of your pet. You will most likely find that your rescue pet also has special one of a kind qualities. Adopting a rescue pet is one way to honor a pet that has passed away.

Many purebred animals are available from rescue groups and shelters. Each animal born takes it’s place among the unimaginable number of pets born each year who must compete for a finite and limited number of homes. If your litter of pups or kittens do find homes, it will most likely, in the scheme of things, displace other puppies or kittens who then must be euthanized. Tens of thousands of extra animals are born in the valley each year, only to be euthanized for lack of a home!
